Definition of panning off

• The process by which gold is separated from the gravel, etc, left in the cradle or sluice after alluvial washing, or from the crushing quartz, etc, remaining in the stamper-boxes in quartz crushing. So called from a metal pan or dish being used in the operation of panning off.
