Definition of pass

An aperture left open in the workings, through which communication is held between the backs and the drives. They serve as outlets through which quartz or other vein-stuff can be conveyed, as well as for the purposes of ventilation. – The Gold Fields and Mineral Districts of Victoria, 1869.
